Drafted in the 12th round (356th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014 (signed for $330,000).
View Draft Report
Yamamoto took advantage of scouting heat present during a mid-May matchup with potential first-rounder Kodi Mederios. Yamamoto won the duel 2-0 and gained attention with excellent stuff for a high school pitcher while lacking ideal size for a high draft pick. He's listed at 6-foot-1 but likely stands closer to 5-foot-11. He has good control of his three-pitch mix and some scouts grade him with three solid-average pitches, with his slider perhaps earning above-average grades. He pitches at 88-90 mph, topping out at 92-93 at times, and knows how to use his change and curve. He's strong-bodied and could step right into Arizona's weekend rotation as a freshman.

Track Record: A 12th-round pick by the Brewers in 2014, Yamamoto was one of four prospects traded to the Marlins in January as part of the Christian Yelich trade. Yamamoto dealt with minor injuries in his first year with the Marlins, but he finished the season strong in the Arizona Fall League.
Scouting Report: Yamamoto isn't overpowering, sitting mostly 89-93 mph with his fastball, but all of his stuff tends to play up because of his above-average to plus control. His late-breaking, downer curveball is his best secondary offering, flashing plus at times but consistently grading as an above-average pitch. Yamamoto has feel for a changeup, giving him three average-or-better pitches.
The Future: Despite being an undersized righthander, Yamamoto has performed well at each of his previous stops and was added to the Marlins' 40-man roster this offseason. He's made only three starts in Double-A, so he's likely to begin 2019 back in Jacksonville before a possible in-season promotion to Triple-A New Orleans. He has the potential of a mid-rotation starter.
