View Draft Report
Many scouts view Frazier as a future utility infielder, but scouting directors recognized that he stood out in a thin crowd of college middle infielders by voting him a preseason third-team All-American. He has had a solid junior season and benefited from teams' frequent looks at teammate Hunter Renfroe, a probable first-round pick, because his subtle skills emerge on repeat viewing. Frazier's tools are modest. He's an average defender at shortstop with an average arm, an excellent internal clock and strong instincts. His agility and footwork play in the middle infield, and his consistency earned him a spot on USA Baseball's college national team last summer. At 5-foot-11, 174 pounds, he has not hit a home run in three college seasons but has enough punch to fight off good fastballs. He handles the bat well and will work walks. He's an average runner.

Frazier grew on the Pirates as they scouted his more highly touted Mississippi State teammate Hunter Renfroe, who wound up being the Padres' first-round pick in 2013. Frazier's calling cards are his line-drive hitting stroke and defensive versatility. He did not hit a home run in three college seasons and has gone deep just three times in three pro seasons. However, he used his gap-to-gap approach to set the Georgia state record with 53 career doubles during his high school career in Watkinsville, and he has continued that approach. He nearly won the Eastern League batting title with a .324 average at Double-A Altoona in 2015. Frazier is solid defensively at two premium defensive positions--shortstop and center field--and he has also played second base, third base and left field as a pro. While he doesn't have any plus tools, he has plenty of baseball acumen--he's a bright guy who majored in kinesiology in college--and the willingness to do whatever is asked. Frazier got a chance to face advanced competition at the end of 2015 in the Arizona Fall League and for Team USA in the international Premier 12 tournament. He will begin 2016 at Triple-A Indianapolis and could eventually fill a bench role for the Pirates, who value versatile players.
