After a promising 2014 season was interrupted with a shoulder problem that eventually required arthroscopic surgery, Landa roared back into organizational prominence. He made one outing in mid- May at low Class A Cedar Rapids before returning to extended spring training and later the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Seven scoreless outings later, he was back in the Midwest League by mid-July, where he became a back-end bullpen piece for the playoff run. He pitches at 92-95 mph with his fastball, touching 97 mph. His late-breaking slider is a plus pitch that gave him a two-strike weapon against both righties and lefties. Lefties managed just six hits (all singles) in 65 combined plate appearances. With long arms and an easy delivery, Landa's power repertoire gets on hitters in a hurry. His command was surprisingly good coming off surgery, and he met whatever challenge Kernels manager Jake Mauer gave him. At a sturdy 190 pounds, Landa proved durable as well, securing five or more outs in 12 of his final 13 regularseason outings. He was added to the 40-man roster in November, another indication of his progress.
