Snelten has come a long way since high school, when he stood 5-foot-8 as a freshman and pitched with a 78 mph fastball as a sophomore. Now he's a 6-foot-7, 230-pounder with a heater that peaks at 95 mph and seems even quicker because his long arms give him tremendous extension. He missed the first month of the season after straining his elbow during December workouts, but has bounced back to work in the low 90s of much of the spring. A Padres 30th-round pick out of high school in Illinois in 2010, Snelten has improved his changeup, athleticism and delivery in his three years at Minnesota. Scouts aren't enamored with his arm action and say it could prevent him from developing a solid breaking ball. His command needs refinement as well. The bottom line is that there aren't many southpaws who can match his size and velocity.
