Signed for $100,000 as a 16th-round pick out of high school in 2013, Gassaway's production finally started to match his potential in 2016. He played in short-season leagues exclusively during his first three pro seasons, hitting .246 with just two home runs in 451 at-bats. Gassaway began the 2016 season at extended spring training yet again but broke through once he reached low Class A Delmarva by hitting .330/.372/.511 with seven homers in 50 games. He made gains with hitting coach Milt May, and coaches loved working with him because of his strong work ethic. A physical, 6-foot-4 corner outfielder with good bat speed, Gassaway improved his plate approach in 2016 by learning to take the breaking ball to right-center field. He can hit any fastball, showed power to all fields and became much more consistent in the batter's box. He needs to step up his defense in left field because he runs below-average routes and has a below-average arm. The Orioles are excited to see what Gassaway can do with a full year at high Class A Frederick in 2017.
