The Orioles signed Murphy for $275,000 in 2013 as one of three high school catchers the club took in the first six rounds, including Chance Sisco and Jonah Heim. Murphy grew up near the Orioles high Class A Frederick affiliate and played in high school at Baltimore's Calvert Hall. He was the Gatorade player of the year for the state of Maryland as a senior. The Orioles signed him away from his Wake Forest commitment. He got off to a solid start in 2015 at low Class A Delmarva and was among the South Atlantic League's RBI leaders when a sports-hernia injury sent him to the disabled list. He didn't return until mid-August. His offense is ahead of his defense right now. He shows good bat speed and some power to all fields, with his hit tool a notch behind his power. A below-average runner, he plays with an intensity that impressed club officials. Drafted as a catcher, Murphy will see time at first base in 2016. He showed decent receiving and blocking skills but with an inconsistent arm and mechanics. Murphy should start in either low Class A Delmarva or high Class A Frederick in 2016.
