Organization Prospect Rankings
TRACK RECORD: A 2017 10th-rounder from NAIA power Lewis-Clark State, Brogdon is a big, hardthrowing righthander who logged a 2.50 ERA in three minor league seasons and earned a spot at the Phillies alternate training site in 2020. He made his major league debut in August and became one of the few reliable members of the Phillies' MLB-worst bullpen, pitching to a 3.97 ERA in nine appearances with 17 strikeouts, five walks and five hits allowed in 11.1 innings.
SCOUTING REPORT: Brogdon's arsenal is headlined by a plus fastball that averages 95 mph and has a high spin rate between 2,400-2,500 rpm. In the past he's thrown a 79-83 mph slider that doesn't have much power and featured slurvy action, but he ditched the pitch in the majors. His circle changeup averages 84 mph with good deception and plus fading life. Major league hitters struggled against the pitch, producing just two hits in 16 at-bats--both singles--and striking out eight times. Brogdon has average control.
THE FUTURE: Brogdon solidified himself as a valuable weapon out of the bullpen. He will need to cut down on his walk rate and continue staying aggressive in the zone.
TRACK RECORD: A 10th-round senior sign out of NAIA power Lewis-Clark State, Brogdon quickly moved to the bullpen as a pro. It's been a fortuitous move as he's turned himself into a viable prospect.
SCOUTING REPORT: Brogdon attacks hitters with a 92-96 mph above-average fastball that has solid riding life to go with excellent extension. He elevates it well and he has the plus spin rate to get swings and misses. His circle change is an 82-84 mph plus pitch with quality fade and sink. Brogdon relies mainly on those two pitches. He will sporadically throw a below-average slider that is a big breaker, but he doesn't have confidence to use it as more than a surprise pitch. He has average control.
THE FUTURE: The Phillies didn't opt to promote Brogdon to the majors in September but he can be expected to be part of the Phillies' 2020 bullpen plans. He projects as a solid middle-innings reliever.
Draft Prospects
Brogdon has a long, lean frame at 6-foot-5 and 175 pounds and a loose, athletic delivery. Those are obvious reasons for scouts to see projection in him, not to mention that his father is 6-foot-8 with a big, strong build. Brogdon throws his fastball in the 87-91 mph range and mixes in an average curveball. He has committed to Fresno State and won't be an easy player to sign, but a team may be willing to roll the dice on his upside.
