Other organizations might not be as high on Bowman as are the Mets, but the club is optimistic they have a command-oriented starter on their hands. He completed his Princeton economics degree following the 2013 season, and he naturally takes a cerebral approach with him to the mound, mixing and matching his four pitches and wearing out the strike zone. Built along the lines of Tim Lincecum, he patterns his delivery after the two-time Cy Young Award winner. He's athletic enough to do so, seeing as he played shortstop in addition to pitching in college. Bowman throws a sinker at 90-94 mph, two distinct breaking balls and a solid-average, high-70s changeup with fading action that's his go-to secondary pitch. His downer curveball and late-breaking slider feature inconsistent action and grade no better than fringe-average at present. Bowman fields his position and holds runners, but it's his plus control and natural deception that set him apart. The Mets would like to see him better establish his heavy fastball early in games before unveiling all his secondary pitches. Bowman projects as a No. 4 starter in the majors.
