Drafted in the 5th round (160th overall) by the Minnesota Twins in 2012 (signed for $267,100).

J.T. Chargois is Rice's main closer and projects as a top-two-rounds selection, but it's Duffey who's having a better season in the Owls' bullpen. Entering the Conference USA tournament, Duffey had a superior ERA (1.84 to 2.27), strikeout rate (11.7 per nine innings to 8.8) and opponent average (.172 to .214). He doesn't have Chargois' pure stuff, but Duffey has an 88-92 mph fastball that touches 94 and backs it up with an average slider. He has the makings of a changeup and a durable 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame, so a pro team could give him a chance to start. Scouts also love the way he competes.

Organization Prospect Rankings
Duffey evokes a young John Lackey with his durability, physical presence and competitive grit on the mound. His emotions still get the best of him at times, but he has done a better job of channeling that fire in a productive way. Making stops at each of the top three minor league levels, Duffey joined lefthander Jason Wheeler as the only Twins pitching prospects to reach 150 innings in 2014. Throwing from a three-quarters arm angle, he pitches at 90-93 mph with his fastball, touching 95 and showing late life. His slurvy breaking ball comes in at 77-80 mph and shows sweeping tilt at times. His long arm action is similar to that of Jose Berrios. His changeup can play up to average at times, but he allowed 12 homers and a .474 slugging percentage to lefthanders in 2014. Duffey's control continues to improve, and his walk rate of 1.8 batters per nine innings trailed only Aaron Slegers among Twins farmhands with at least 85 innings. He should open 2015 at Triple-A Rochester with a chance to reach the majors by midseason should a need arise.
