A draft-and-follow signed in 1991 after one season at San Jacinto (Texas) JC, Pettitte has become a hot commodity regularly mentioned by other teams wanting to trade with the Yankees. Pettitte boasts an above-average lefty repertoire: a fastball that he can tail both in and out, a down-breaking curveball and a great pickoff move. He also improved on his aggressiveness in tight situations this year. Pettitte needs to find tune his command of his breaking pitch and changeup, something he improved in instructional league. Depending on Jimmy Key's comeback from surgery, Pettitte has a chance to make the big league rotation in 1995. Though the Yankees would rather avoid it, he might bounce between being a major league swingman and a Triple-A starter, much as Sterling Hitchcock did in 1994.
Pettitte was signed as a draft-and-follow just prior to the 1991 draft after spending one season with San Jacinto (Texas) JC. He’s 28-16, 2.43 as a pro, with fine control numbers. Pettitte’s fastball averages 90-92 mph. His curveball veers down sharply, and his circle-changeup moves down and away from righthanded hitters. His calm demeanor is a plus. Pitch selection with respect to setting up hitters needs improvement, and Pettite’s fastball would be more effective if he could locate it better to his glove side. Big and strong, his body can get doughy if he doesn’t watch his weight. Mentioned in trade talks almost as much as third baseman Russ Davis, Pettitte looks to emerge in the Bronx sometime in 1995. Double-A Albany is the logical ticket for this year.
