West is a redshirt junior who has had an up-and-down career for the Huskies. He had Tommy John surgery as a sophomore and has blossomed this year, putting together his best season. West went 7-5, 2.53 with 65 strikeouts and 18 walks over 96 innings. He throws his fastball in the 90-93 mph range and tops out at 95. His slider comes in around 82-84 mph with late tilt, and he also throws a changeup. West commands all three pitches and pitches down in the zone.

The Astros scouted Stanford righthander Mark Appel hard while considering him for the No. 1 overall pick in 2012. While doing so, they spotted West, who emerged as one of the Pacific-12 Conference's better starters as a redshirt junior two years removed from surgery to repair frayed cartilage in his elbow. He took a loss against Appel, but West also sat at 89-93 mph and touched 95 with his fastball. Houston signed him for $50,000 in the 17th round and was rewarded with a promising debut. West worked more off his fastball more after turning and his velocity increased to a consistent 90-96 mph. He has average command of his fastball. While neither his cutter/slider nor changeup projects as a plus pitch, they both find the strike zone and help him keep hitters off balance. West has a body built for durability and his delivery has no major red flags. He could jump on the fast track and will spend some if not all of 2013 in high Class A.
