Projected as a potential top 10 rounds pick in 2011 during his junior year at NCAA Division II Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Fleck had Tommy John surgery that year and wasn't drafted. The Diamondbacks signed him as a nondrafted free agent, and he flew under the prospect radar until his 2014 season at Double-A Mobile, where a jump in velocity helped him rank third among Southern League relievers with 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Fleck's fastball had previously been in the 90-91 mph range, but in 2014 it jumped to 95-96 and touched 98. He always has flashed a plus slider in the mid-80s, giving him a power reliever's arsenal. While he generally keeps the ball in the zone, he struggles with his command when he doesn't repeat his stiff, upright delivery. Fleck was shut down late in the Arizona Fall League season with a stress reaction in his right elbow, but the Diamondbacks expect him to be ready for spring training in 2015. He could see big league time in 2015 if the Diamondbacks need a power bullpen arm.
