The Diamondbacks signed the 18-year-old Hernandez for just $15,000 in 2012, and he broke out in the NWL this season. He nearly won the pitching triple crown by ranking first with a 2.32 ERA and with 93 strikeouts, and he tied for third with six wins. Hernandez credited Hillsboro pitching coach Doug Drabek, the 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner, with helping adjust his mental approach. He said he has learned to pitch more in the strike zone and not avoid contact. A smallish righthander, Hernandez is a strike-throwing machine in the mold of Everett's Andrew Moore, but with a tick more velocity. He sits 91-92 mph but can push his fastball to 94. Hernandez has a plus slider with a changeup that's clearly his third-best pitch at this time. He's not the most athletic pitcher, with a stocky build, but he has a clean, repeatable delivery. "He's undersized, but he can really pitch," one NWL manager said. "He's got average athleticism. He's not a quick-twitch guy, but he's a strike-thrower.""
