TRACK RECORD: Signed for $60,000 out of the Dominican Republic, Rodriguez spent three years in short-season ball before breaking out with low Class A Hickory in 2019. He went 7-3, 2.08 in 13 starts and earned South Atlantic League all-star honors, but an elbow injury ended his season in July. Though the Rangers didn't bring Rodriguez to their alternate training site in 2020, they added him to the 40-man roster after the season.
SCOUTING REPORT: Rodriguez's fastball sits at 92-96 mph, which is a tick above-average, but its high spin rate makes it a plus pitch, to the point where he often dominated lower level hitters in 2019 with just that pitch. Rodriguez's secondary pitches are the concern. His fringe-average curveball is slurvy and his changeup is average, at best. Rodriguez has a unique ability to manipulate the ball and throws all of his pitches for strikes with above-average control.
THE FUTURE: Rodriguez's secondary pitches must improve for him to stay in the mix as a starting pitcher. He more likely ends up as a multi-inning reliever in the majors.
