A three-year starter, Edman finished his junior season hitting third for Stanford despite a modest 5-foot-10, 180-pound frame. An academic all-American, he may fit better as a senior sign, as his best tool is his defense, with soft hands, good actions and average range and arm strength. He's an average runner if not a tick above who makes solid contact from both sides of the plate, though he has little power.

Track Record: Edman has consistently outperformed initial impressions since his days as Stanford's No. 3 hitter at all of 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. A sixth-round pick in 2016, Edman climbed three levels to Double-A his first full season and ascended to Triple-A in his second, batting .301 with 30 steals and finishing as the starting second baseman and leadoff hitter on Memphis' Triple-A championship team.
Scouting Report: Edman's bat speed is modest, but the switch-hitter takes a disciplined approach, recognizes pitches and has a level swing that stays in the zone for a long time. He's not much of a home run threat, but he picks out the right pitches to drive for extra-bases. Edman's above-average speed plays up with his superb instincts. He makes all the plays at both shortstop and second base with good positioning and soft hands, and his fringe-average arm plays up with an advanced internal clock.
The Future: The Cardinals envision Edman filling the utility infield role previously held by Greg Garcia and Daniel Descalso. Edman has more tools than both of them, however, and may ascend to more. -
Edman started three years at Stanford and finished his junior year batting third for the Cardinal despite his 5-foot-10, 180-pound frame. An academic All-American who majored in math and computational science, Edman attracted the Cardinals with his smarts, makeup and performance track record and was drafted in the sixth round in 2016, signing for $236,400. Edman's best asset is his defense at shortstop, and he rode that three levels to finish his first full season at Double-A Springfield. He is instinctive at shortstop and has solid tools as well, with soft hands, good actions, solid-average range and average arm strength. He is an average runner with the athleticism and mobility for the position. The switch-hitting Edman doesn't strike out much and makes contact at a solid rate from both sides of the plate, He shows the propensity to drive balls into the gaps and leg out doubles and triples, especially batting righthanded. Lacking a plus tool, Edman profiles as a utility infielder but has a long track record of playing above expectations. He will either return to Double-A Springfield or open at Triple-A Memphis depending on his camp performance.

The 5-foot-10 Edman continues to outperform more physically gifted players. He hit .305 with 23 extra-base hits in 49 games at Memphis before being called up June 8 and summarily took over as the Cardinals’ primary third baseman. A switch-hitter, Edman makes contact from both sides of the plate and rarely strikes out. His plus speed and instincts make him a prolific basestealer who rarely gets thrown out. He is above-average defensively at both second and third base, and even began playing some outfield this year. Edman’s speed and contact profile make him a utilityman for most evaluators. The Cardinals see an everyday player.
