Track Record: Klobosits was drafted out of high school in 2014 by the Red Sox in the 25th round. Instead of signing, Klobosits went to Galveston (Texas) JC and dominated for two seasons before heading to Auburn, where his results were mediocre at best. After signing with the Nationals in the 36th round, Klobosits wowed by posting a 1.47 ERA in 30.2 innings across three levels, with a 34-8 K/BB ratio.
Scouting Report: A highly anticipated sophomore season in pro ball was cut short after just 16.1 innings in the Carolina League, as Klobosits underwent Tommy John surgery in May. Massively built at 6-foot-7, 270 pounds, Klobosits has an impressive two-pitch combination between a low to mid-90s fastball with exceptional angle as well as a slider that could wind up being a plus offering. Prior to walking 11 batters in 11 games in 2018, Klobosits had shown remarkable control for a pitcher of his size.
The Future: It'll be fascinating to see what Klobosits looks like when he returns to the mound at some point in late 2019 or 2020. If he comes back healthy, he could eventually become a weapon in the bullpen.
It will take several years to figure out the 2017 draft class, but Klobosits has a great early case as the steal of the group. After signing out of the 36th round, Klobosits posted a 1.47 ERA across the Gulf Coast, New York-Penn and South Atlantic Leagues. A 22-year-old righty out of Auburn, Klobosits was older than the average pitcher at each level, but evaluators were impressed with his stuff in his pro debut. Listed at 6-foot-7, 270-pounds, Klobosits pitches off of a low-to-mid 90s fastball that touches 96 and has exceptional downward movement. The pitch doesn't stay in the strike zone long and is complemented by a slider that's flashed plus for some scouts. Control is usually an issue for pitchers with Klobosits' build, but the former Tiger has no collegiate history of high walk rates in two seasons as a reliever in the SEC and issued just 2.3 walks per nine during his debut as a pro. He could continue to move quickly through the minors as a reliever, which is his most likely role in the majors.
Draft Prospects
A 25th-round pick of the Red Sox's last year, Klobosits should go even better this year as a big (6-foot-6, 275 pounds) hard-throwing (93-96 mph) righthander with a track record of success at the junior college ranks. His hard breaking ball and lack of a changeup profiles him as a reliever. He's set to attend Auburn next year if he doesn't go pro.
