Drafted in the 4th round (111th overall) by the Oakland Athletics in 2017 (signed for $482,600).

Toffey is an above-average defensive third baseman with a strong arm and good control of the strike zone, but scouts are unsure whether he has the power to profile at the position at the next level. He doesn't have one standout tool to get excited about, but his improvement at the plate during his third year with Vanderbilt is encouraging. Each year during his time with the Commodores, Toffey has improved his strikeout-to-walk ratio, culminating in a junior campaign where he's walked almost twice as often as he's struck out. Tack on his eight home runs--doubling his previous collegiate high of four--and a strong second year in the Cape Cod League and an analytics department might be even more excited about his track record at the plate than scouts are about his tools.

Track Record: Drafted out of high school and then as an eligible Vanderbilt sophomore in 2016, Toffey didn't sign until after his junior year in 2017, when the Athletics drafted him in the fourth round. Oakland traded him to the Mets a year later, along with reliever Bobby Wahl and $1 million in international bonus pool money, for closer Jeurys Familia. Toffey was 23 during his 2018 full-season debut, so in light of his age, the Mets promoted him to Double-A Binghamton after acquiring him.
Scouting Report: Toffey recorded a career-best .179 isolated slugging percentage at Double-A after the trade but faces questions about his power potential. The Mets hope offseason shoulder surgery will free up his swing to get to his solid-average raw power. Toffey has an outstanding batting approach that helped him run a 16 percent walk rate in 2018 and a .375 on-base percentage in pro ball. His ability to work counts and wait for his pitch should help him access his power. He makes consistent hard, line-drive contact that equates to an average hit tool with gap power. Toffey profiles at third base with above-average range and arm strength.
The Future: Toffey's lefthanded bat sets him apart at third base, and if he can get to more power, he could develop into a second-division regular with strong on-base skills. He should reach Triple-A in 2019.
Known for his excellent plate discipline, Toffey walked 99 times and struck out 74 over his final two seasons at Vanderbilt. In 2017, Toffey led the Commodores' regulars in average (.354), on-base percentage (.475) and slugging percentage (.602). He also hit 12 homers. The A's picked him in the fourth round and signed him for $482,600. Toffey comes from an athletic family: His father, Jack, is an agent. Will's brother, John, coached him in baseball and hockey at Salisbury (Conn.) Prep. Will was good enough in hockey to have Cornell, Harvard and Yale want him for that sport. Toffey's athleticism and mature approach help, but evaluators have questions about his ultimate offensive impact. With Vermont in the New York-Penn League after signing, Toffey exhibited his strike zone knowledge--38 walks and 45 strikeouts in 253 plate appearances--but managed only a .263 average and one home run. With his size and ability to wait for his pitch, Toffey could develop into more power. He is considered above average defensively at third base with a plus arm. His speed is fringe-average. Members of the A's organization like Toffey for his approach and knowledge of the game. He figures to begin 2018 with low Class A Beloit.

Toffey was one of three players from Salisbury Prep to play in the Area Code Games, as many as any school in the country. The youngest of five, Toffey is one of the top hockey players in the northeast. The 19-year-old has decided to concentrate on baseball at the next level and his skills continue to improve away from the ice. Currently a shortstop, Toffey profiles best as a third baseman with an above-average arm that that flashes plus. He has posted below-average times out of the box, though his speed is starting to translate to the baseball field. He offers potential as a lefthanded bat with a quick stroke through the zone. Toffey, who has natural feel for the zone and a good approach, projects to have an average hit tool with at least average power, though that may come after three years at Vanderbilt because he is considered a tough sign. The 6-foot, 199-pound has a strong, physical body.
