Track Record: In two years at Mesa (Ariz.) JC, Funderburk was a junior college All-American as a hitter who sometimes pitched. In his only year at Dallas Baptist, he posted a 6.84 ERA and hit .300 with 13 home runs. Even though he looked more like a first baseman, the Twins drafted him as a late-round pitcher. He had a rocky start to full-time pitching, but began to dominate midway through 2022. In his late-season MLB debut, Funderburk posted a 0.75 ERA with nine consecutive scoreless appearances to end his first MLB season. It was an impressive highlight for a former two-way player who embraced the chance to reshape his body to be a pitcher.
Scouting Report: Funderburk added a sinker as a pro, and it’s helped him become a solid reliever. While none of his pitches is dominating, he’s a lefty who is equally effective against righties and lefties thanks to a four-seam and fringy mid-80s changeup for righties and a sinker-slider at the bottom of the zone against lefties. His 90-92 mph four-seamer keeps hitters from getting too comfortable in protecting the bottom of the zone and he throws his above-average sinker a tick harder in the 91-93 mph range.
The Future: Funderburk’s career found a new gear as soon as the Twins moved him to the bullpen. He has a solid shot to be a regular in the Twins’ 2024 bullpen, and add yet another pitcher to the list of recent Twins’ late-round pitching scouting and development success stories.
