Drafted in the 6th round (168th overall) by the Chicago White Sox in 2018 (signed for $260,000).
View Draft Report
No one bit on drafting Heuer as a draft-eligible sophomore last year, but that should change this year after he posted a solid season as the Shockers' Friday night starter. Hitters get a good look at the ball as Heuer has a long arm action, but he carries his 92-93 mph velocity easily through starts and generally has 94-96 mph available whenever he needs it. Both his slider and changeup are below-average pitches right now, so a team drafting Heuer will either need to help him improve his secondaries or move him to the bullpen, where all of his stuff would likely play up.

TRACK RECORD: After a successful career as a starter at Wichita State, Heuer moved to the bullpen in his first full season as a pro and immediately found success. Combined between high Class A and Double-A, Heuer whiffed 8.6 per nine innings. He made his big league debut on July 24 and was a part of Chicago's prospect-laden bullpen the rest of the way.
SCOUTING REPORT: Heuer operates primarily with two pitches: An upper-90s sinker and a devastating high-80s slider which induced a 67% whiff rate in 23.2 big league innings. The growth of the slider was huge in fueling Heuer's rise to Chicago. High-speed cameras showed flaws in the way he was delivering the pitch, and the resulting tweaks to his release point and hand positioning allowed him to get on top of the ball more often for consistent, sharp break. Heuer also gets deception because of the way he hides the ball in the back of his delivery.
THE FUTURE: Heuer's role in 2020 is likely where he'll settle going forth—a power-armed reliever who pitches late innings and can rack up plenty of strikeouts. He should begin 2021 back in Chicago.
TRACK RECORD: Heuer was a Friday starter at Wichita State in his junior year and showed enough potential for the White Sox to spend a sixth-round pick and $260,000 on him in 2018. He lasted just one season as a starter before moving to the bullpen full-time in 2019, when he finished the season in Double-A.
SCOUTING REPORT: Since moving to the bullpen, Heuer's fastball has jumped up the expected couple of ticks and now regularly bumps 96-97 mph. He comes at hitters from a low slot, which creates plenty of deception. His live arm also produces a slider that grades as potentially plus. That grade represents a marked improvement since his college days, when the slider was below-average. He has a changeup as well but is primarily a two-pitch reliever at this point. He finished the year with 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings.
THE FUTURE: Heuer will likely return to Double-A Birmingham in 2020 before a move to the pitchingadverse conditions of Triple-A Charlotte. He has a ceiling as a middle-relief arm.
