Weatherly had a loose quick arm with a projectably frame out of high school in Michigan, and in three years with Clemson he’s filled out, added strength and significantly improved his breaking ball. As a freshman, Weatherly was a two-way player for the Tigers, before he transitioned into a pitcher-only role in 2019. The transition helped him become one of the team’s most reliable arms out of the bullpen. He took over the Friday night role to start his junior season in 2020, posting a 0.79 ERA over four starts and 22.2 innings, with 43 strikeouts and 14 walks. Now standing 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, Weatherly has loud stuff from the left side with two plus pitches. His fastball sits in the 92-94 mph range and he can run it up to 95-96 regularly and his slider is also a 60-grade offering. He throws a changeup as well, but it’s a distant third pitch. There are reliever questions with Weatherly since most of his time with Clemson was spent in that role, and he’s always walked a significant number of batters. Through four starts in 2020 his walk per nine rate was 5.56, which is actually a career best after walking more than 7.5 per nine in each of his first two seasons. Weatherly is a solid athlete, so teams think there’s a chance he could improve his control moving forward and secure a starting role. If not, his stuff is loud enough from the left side that he could carve out a career as an arm out of the pen as well.

Track Record: After starting his college career as a reliever, Weatherly switched to a starting role in 2020 and impressed. He went 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA in four starts as the Friday starter at Clemson and the Rockies drafted him No. 81 overall, signing him for $755,300. Weatherly impressed in instructional league and then got plenty of seasoning with Low-A Fresno in 2021, posting a 4.83 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 15 starts. A shoulder injury limited him down the stretch.
Scouting Report: Weatherly features a mid-90s fastball that can touch 97 mph with power finish. He has an effective changeup that induces swings and misses and his slider has the potential to be a plus pitch. While Weatherly has loud stuff, he needs to reign in his below-average control and work ahead of hitters more. He especially needs to improve his command of his slider. There are days when Weatherly is dominant and days when he’s not filling up the zone. He is a good athlete and has a high pitching IQ.
The Future: Weatherly has the raw stuff to become a mid-rotation starter. If his strike-throwing doesn’t improve, he profiles as a lefthanded setup man.
-
TRACK RECORD: Weatherly pitched exclusively out of the bullpen his first two seasons at Clemson and piled up strikeouts and walks in just about equal measure. He found his stride as a starter in 2020 before the season shut down, leading the Rockies to draft him in the third round and sign him for $755,300.
SCOUTING REPORT: Stuff is not a question with Weatherly. He throws his fastball 92-96 mph from the left side with a plus slider. He also has a changeup in his repertoire, but it's a clear third pitch. The question with Weatherly is consistency of those pitches, and to put more of a fine point on it, whether he can command them well enough to continue as a starter. Weatherly is an intellectual pitcher who understands the craft, but his control is well below-average and will need lots of work.
THE FUTURE: The Rockies are committed to having Weatherly debut as a starter. His electric stuff should make him an effective short reliever if he fails to stick in the rotation.

Weatherly's loose, quick arm and projectable frame got him drafted in the 27th round by the Blue Jays out of his Michigan high school. He instead went to Clemson where he filled out, added strength and significantly improved his breaking ball over three years. A two-way player as a freshman, Weatherly focused solely on pitching in the Tigers' bullpen in 2019 and emerged as their Friday night starter in 2020. He posted a 0.79 ERA in four starts before the season shut down. Now standing 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, Weatherly has loud stuff from the left side. His fastball sits in the 92-94 mph range and reaches 95-96 regularly, while his slider gives him a second plus offering. He throws a changeup as well, but it’s a distant third pitch. Weatherly projects as a reliever for many teams because of his lack of a third pitch and below-average control, which manifested in 5.56 walks per nine in 2020. Weatherly is a solid athlete, so others believe he could improve his control enough to be a starter in pro ball. Even if he ends up a reliever, his stuff is loud enough from the left side to carve out a career in a major league bullpen. -
Weatherly has had an up and down spring as he's battled blisters at times, but scouts are pretty confident that the Clemson signee is going to develop into a solid starting pitcher. Right now Weatherly generally sits 87-89 mph, touching 90 with a curveball that's not yet flashing above-average or plus. His changeup is a little more advanced than his breaking ball. Weatherly was expected to be a tough sign with a commitment to Clemson, but he's extremely athletic with a loose, lithe body and a fast arm. He has the frame to add strength and velocity and as a cold-weather pitcher, the best is yet to come.
