A Washington prep product, Cosgrove lost a competition to Joey Morgan as a freshman at Washington to be Austin Rei's backup. He transferred to Santa Barbara (Calif.) CC for a season before coming to North Carolina State as a junior. He hit and defended his way to being N.C. State's starter as a junior, pushing talented freshman Brad Debo to DH spot. Cosgrove doesn't have one plus tool but has average arm strength, blocks and receives adequately and has solid agility and athletic ability for the position. He's a contact-oriented hitter with fringy power, mostly to the gaps.
