Drafted in the 4th round (119th overall) by the Texas Rangers in 2018 (signed for $1,000,000).
View Draft Report
Every year the draft has a number of projectable young pitchers whose "arrows are pointing up" according to scouts. Englert is one of those, as he has the look and developing stuff of a future mid-rotation starter, even if it requires some projection right now. He can touch 94-95 with his fastball at times, but he has generally pitched at 88-90 mph. He's a skinny 6-foot-5 with the frame to fill out over the next few years. Englert throws a promising slider and curveball that both need refinement and currently grade as fringy, but they flash enough to project into future above-average offerings. If Englert gets to Texas A&M it's easy to see him developing into a potential first rounder in a few years, but an aggressive team could try to pay him enough now to skip the three-year wait.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High
Track Record: After signing for $1 million in 2018, Englert was part of the Rangers ill-fated plan to shut all of their 2018 top pitching signees. Englert, like most of them, quickly blew out his elbow. He had Tommy John surgery early in the 2019 season, which means that he didn't make his actual pro debut until 2021, nearly three years after he signed. Englert threw seven-innings of a no-hitter in 2022, followed by six no-hit innings in his next start, but the no-hitter was broken up with two outs in the ninth. Englert was acquired by the Tigers as a Rule 5 pick.
Scouting Report: Englert baffles hitters with a wide array of pitches. He has two and four-seam 91-93 mph fastballs, a low-80s slider, a mid-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup. He can attack hitters with a sinker/slider approach or four-seam fastballs up in the zone mixed with curveballs. None of his pitches his plus, and only his changeup grades as above-average, but every one of these pitches is fringe-average to average and he has above-average control.
The Future: As a Rule 5 pick, Englert will have to make a big leap from less than 200 innings of MiLB experience and three starts of Double-A to the big leagues. His varied arsenal fits better as a No. 4 or No. 5 starter than it does as a reliever, but his short-term role more likely is as a long-man in the pen.

Track Record: The Rangers drafted prep arms with three of their top four picks in the 2018 draft and signed them for seven-figure bonuses, including Englert, who got $1 million as a fourth-rounder. They shut all three of them down from official games after signing, but at instructional league, Englert made a loud impression.
Scouting Report: Going into the draft, Englert had several positive indicators between his tall, projectable frame, easy mechanics, athleticism and arm speed suggesting more in the tank. At instructs, that projection started to manifest. He went from throwing mostly upper 80s in the summer of 2017 to low 90s in the spring of 2018 and then topped out at 96 mph with good extension after signing. Englert reached that velocity without much effort in his delivery, which is calm and repeatable, helping him locate his fastball to both sides of the plate. He has shown feel to spin both his slider and curveball, both flashing above-average potential but inconsistent. Englert sells his changeup with good arm action, though he didn't throw it often.
The Future: Englert has the components of a starting pitcher, and he could join fellow 2018 draft pick Cole Winn next season in the short-season Spokane rotation.
