View Draft Report
Bedell skipped his senior season of high school to reclassify and enroll early at Missouri. After barely pitching as a freshman, Bedell was an excellent long reliever for the Tigers in 2019 and posted a 0.59 ERA in six starts with Harwich (Cape Cod) last summer. He stepped into the rotation this spring and was efficient (2-2, 3.70 with a 35-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 24.1 innings). Bedell is young for his class and has plus control and above-average command. His athleticism and extreme confidence are impressive. Other than his control and his makeup, nothing else is plus and he has a smaller frame. His average fastball would touch 94-95 mph out of the pen, but this spring he sat 89-91, touching 92. His changeup may end up as an above-average pitch. He throws an average 81-84 mph spike curve that sometimes morphs into a sliderish pitch when he gets on the side of it. He’s started to mess with a true slider as well and may eventually have four pitches. Bedell’s strong summer in the Cape Cod League and control makes him a pretty safe and solid pick in the third or fourth round, especially if a pro team can help him add a little more velocity.

Track Record: Bedell skipped his senior year of high school to enroll at Missouri, where he worked primarily out of the bullpen as an underclassman. He broke out as a starter for Wareham in the Cape Cod League in 2019 and moved into Missouri's rotation the following spring, but made only four starts before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the season. The Cardinals saw enough in that limited time to draft Bedell in the fourth round and sign him for an above-slot bonus of $800,000. Bedell's pro debut lasted just one month before he had Tommy John surgery, but he returned midway through the 2022 season and made six appearances.
Scouting Report: Bedell looks the part as a 6-foot-2 righthander with a lean, athletic frame. His stuff doesn't jump out on the radar gun, but he delivers the ball from a low three-quarters arm slot that allows his stuff to play above its velocity. Bedell's fastball sits 91-93 mph and touches 96 mph with ride and heavy armside run, making it difficult for hitters to get on plane with. His primary secondary is a fringy, high-70s curveball with two-plane break and solid depth. He'll also mix in a fringy changeup in the mid-80s with heavy armside run that plays off his fastball. Bedell had above-average control before surgery, but it remains unknown whether it is still intact due to his limited innings.
The Future: Bedell has a chance to be a back-of-the-rotation starter if his stuff and control return to pre-injury form. If not, he'll likely be limited to an up-and-down starter.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 55. Curveball: 45. Changeup 45. Control: 50. -
TRACK RECORD: After an impressive sophomore season as a reliever, Bedell earned himself a lot of money by making six dominant starts in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2019. He went 4-0, 0.59 in six starts with 36 strikeouts and three walks in 31 innings. Bedell's excellent summer became even more important when the 2020 college season was shut down in mid March. By then, he had made four solid starts in Missouri's weekend rotation.
SCOUTING REPORT: Nothing Bedell throws stands out, but his competitiveness and confidence are apparent. His 89-93 mph fastball is fringe-average, although some scouts see it as average because of his above-average command and plus control. His changeup is average as well. He also throws an average low-80s spike curveball and he's recently added a fringe-average slider.
THE FUTURE: Bedell is seen as a high-floor, quick mover with a solid track record of success. Bedell has had some success in the bullpen in college and will touch 94-95 more often as a reliever, but his command and control should give him a shot to prove he can be a starter.

Track Record: Following freshman and sophomore campaigns spent in the Missouri bullpen Bedell broke out with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod League over the summer of 2019. Bedell made six starts for Wareham that summer compiling a 0.59 ERA with 36 strikeouts to 3 walks over 30.2 innings. He performed well in his four starts as a member of Missouri's rotation before the 2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic. He was assigned to High-A Peoria out of camp last spring, but his season was cut short after two starts, as Bedell tore his UCL and underwent Tommy John surgery.
Scouting Report: Prior to the injury Bedell deployed a three-pitch mix consisting of a low-90s four-seam fastball, a slurvy low-80s curveball with two-plane break, and a mid-80s changeup. He succeeded due to a feel for the entirety of his arsenal showing the ability to land all three pitches for strikes and keeping hitters off balance, with the ability to throw any of his pitches in any count. Bedell faced live at bats in March and the organization has taken it purposely slow with his return.
The Future: With a high level of pitchability and perhaps more projection in his velocity across his arsenal Bedell has a chance to be a backend of the rotation arm, but likely settles in as starter depth for a competitive team. -
