De Horta has a skinny, projectable 6-foot-2 frame and a loose arm action, but he needs to become more physical. He throws strikes with an 87-90 mph fastball, but the pitch is rather straight, and his command within the zone is below-average. He also struggles to command his big 73-75 curveball with 11-to-5 break, but it projects as a serviceable offering down the road. He has limited feel for his changeup, essentially only throwing it in warm-ups. De Horta needs to learn to repeat his delivery better, improve his command and stuff, but he does have projection. He is committed to Cal State Fullerton.

De Horta flew under the radar coming out of high school in Southern California and was expected to head to nearby Cal State Fullerton, but the Padres drafted the 18-year-old in the eighth round and signed him to an above-slot bonus of $425,000. De Horta was one of the AZL?s more pleasant surprises, a bulldog competitor with plenty of projection in his athletic frame. He delivers his 90-92 mph fastball from a high three-quarters slot with tailing life and sinking action. De Horta?s best pitch is an above-average changeup that he throws with good arm speed. His curveball is not quite a 12-to-6 pitch but has some depth, projecting to be an average offering. ?He has a pretty good idea of pitching,? the Padres? Collins said. ?He had a plan and took whatever information and mixed it with his own plan.?
