Track Record: The 6-foot-7 Wingenter sat 88-92 mph in high school when he was drafted in the 38th round by the Mariners, bumped up to 92-94 in college at Auburn and shot up even more after the Padres drafted him and moved him to the bullpen. He touched 100 mph for the first time at Double-A San Antonio in 2017 and reached the majors in 2018.
Scouting Report: The massive Wingenter has the stuff of a late-inning dynamo. His fastball sits 97-98 and touches 100 while coming downhill at hitters from his towering release point. Wingenter's heater is difficult to touch when he spots it, but his long limbs detract from his control and lead to walks and occasional mistake pitches. Wingenter controls his mid-80s slider better than his fastball, making it an above-average pitch with power and depth.
The Future: Wingenter's size and stuff make him a late-relief option and a potential closer if he can improve his control. He'll open 2019 in the Padres bullpen. -
A 36th-round pick by the Mariners out of high school, Wingenter progressively added velocity as he filled out his 6-foot-7 frame over the years and touched 100 mph for the first time in 2017. As the closer at Double-A San Antonio, he held opponents to a .193 average. Previously 88-92 mph in high school and 92-94 in college at Auburn, Wingenter moved to the bullpen full time in pro ball and added strength. He now sits 96-98 mph and touches triple digits, velocity that's compounded by a towering release point that produces steep downhill angle and makes his heater difficult to square up. As Wingenter's fastball has jumped, so has his slider. It now sits 84-86 mph with tilt and depth, giving him a viable above-average secondary. He excels in high-leverage spots and has no trouble entering with runners on. His long limbs cause some inconsistency with his control, but overall he limits his walks reasonably. Wingenter's intimidating height, premium velocity and lock-down moxie has him primed for late-inning relief. He'll start 2018 at Triple-A El Paso and should break into the Padres bullpen during the year.
Draft Prospects
-
Auburn has a loaded recruiting class and could lose several top-tier signees such as David Dahl, Addison Russell and Colin Rodgers. They hope to hold on to the projectable, 6-foot-7, 190-pound Wingenter. Scouts can dream on him, and they've seen 92 mph radar-gun readings. More commonly he reaches 88-89, and his curveball flashes good shape and some power in the mid-70s. His arm works well, and he should add power to his stuff as his thin body fills out.
