Drafted in the 11th round (336th overall) by the Detroit Tigers in 2013 (signed for $100,000).
View Draft Report
Louisville matched a school record with 46 regular-season victories this year, thanks in large part to the three pitchers in their weekend rotation, who all should get drafted in top 10 rounds. Dace Kime and Jeff Thompson figure to go first, but it's Green who was the Cardinals' Friday starter. A 37th-round pick by the Blue Jays out of an Illinois high school in 2010, he spent most of his first two college seasons in the bullpen. He excels at commanding and pitching off his fastball, which sits at 90-92 mph and touches 94. He uses his 6-foot-4, 216-pound frame to pitch on a steep downhill plane. Green has made progress with his slider, but it's still a below-average offering, as is his changeup. He doesn't miss a lot of bats because hitters sit on his fastball, though he does get a lot of early-count groundouts. He could be headed to the bullpen as a pro.

Green was drafted in 2013 out of Louisville, where he was teammates with fellow righthanders Kyle Funkhouser and Nick Burdi, who are currently prospects in the Tigers and Twins systems, respectively. He signed for $100,000 then reached as high as Double-A with the Tigers before being dealt to New York along with righty Luis Cessa in exchange for lefty setup man Justin Wilson. He bounced up and down between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the big leagues, and made eight starts with the Yankees before being shut down with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament and a strained flexor tendon in his right elbow. He did not have surgery. At his best, Green pitched with a fastball that averaged 95 mph and an above-average hard-breaking slider in the mid-80s. He also has an above-average cutter and a rarely-thrown below-average changeup. The four-pitch arsenal gives Green a chance to start, but his fastball and slider would play well out of the bullpen as well. He'll compete for a rotation spot in spring training. -
Green pitched well in 2014, but he was also a 23-year-old at low Class A West Michigan getting by more on polish than stuff. He pitches off a solid fastball, sitting in the low 90s and touching 94 mph with good movement. He's a prolific strike-thrower who hits his spots and gets ground balls at an above-average rate. Green's strikeout percentage was good in the Midwest League, but that probably will drop once he faces better hitters unless he can come up with a reliable secondary pitch. He throws a slider and a changeup, but both are below-average pitches. Green should move up to high Class A Lakeland in 2015, where his pitchability should still be good enough to work, but he will be tested at upper levels.
