Whiting truly transformed himself after returning for his senior season. After struggling at the plate as a junior in part because of the after effects of a broken nose he suffered on a hit by pitch in the first game of the season, Whiting went back to switch-hitting this season after giving it up as a high school student. Whiting is a natural righthanded hitter, but his lefty swing became so comfortable and fit his speed-based approach enough that he had stopped hitting righthanded. Whiting's switch-hitting has paid off, as he raised his average nearly 100 points, but the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Whiting still doesn't have any productive power and he is not projected to hit enough to be a regular. Defensively, scouts question whether he can stay at shortstop every day and they want to see more reliability--he's posted a sub-.900 fielding percentage this season. His feel for the game, speed and contact-oriented approach makes him a likely utility infielder in pro ball.
