Drafted in the 12th round (365th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 (signed for $210,000).
View Draft Report
Howell, an Iowa signee, is a projectable junior college shortstop with excellent athleticism. He's a plus-plus runner who swiped 39 bases in 48 tries this season to go with his .397/.476/.565 slash line. Physically, Howell needs to fill out and get stronger. His high average aside, there are still worries that he doesn't have much bat speed or strength in his swing right now. His arm is also below-average, although there's some hope that he could improve that as he matures. His range is more than enough for shortstop and his hands work well, but if he's drafted right now, it will be by a team willing to be patient while he matures. His speed would also play well in center field if his arm doesn't improve.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High
Track Record: Lightly recruited out of high school, Howell blossomed over two seasons at Kirkwood (Iowa) JC and signed with the Brewers for an above-slot $210,000 bonus as a 12th round pick in 2018. He used the coronavirus shutdown to add muscle to his frame and improve his plate approach and was rewarded with a breakout season across High-A and Double-A in 2021. The Padres acquired Howell before the start of the 2022 season as part of the deal that sent Victor Caratini to Milwaukee, and Howell was in the midst of a career year through 48 games at Double-A before having season-ending wrist surgery.
Scouting Report: Howell is a high-end athlete whose best asset is his versatility. He spent time at shortstop, second base and all three outfield positions at San Antonio and is a plus runner with twitchy actions and excellent range in the field. An above-average defender everywhere, Howell remains a work in progress at the plate. He has an enticing combination of bat speed, pullside power and a discerning eye at the plate. He will have to iron out a hand-pump in his swing and improve his ability to hit spin in order to develop into an everyday regular.
The Future: Howell will head to Triple-A El Paso in 2023. He projects to be a versatile bench piece and could grow into more if he continues his offensive gains.
Track Record: Howell was not heavily recruited as a high school senior, so he spent two seasons at Kirkwood (Iowa) CC. Milwaukee selected Howell in the 12th round in 2018 and signed him for a well above-slot bonus of $210,000. After meager production over his first two years as a pro, Howell made the most of the 2020 shutdown, adding muscle to his frame and improving his plate approach. The efforts were repaid with a breakout season across High-A and Double-A in 2021.
Scouting Report: A converted infielder, Howell spent a majority of his last two professional seasons patrolling center field. He was moved to the outfield in 2019 and has taken to the position, while still logging time at his natural position of shortstop. In fact, versatility became a major part of his profile in 2021, as he started five or more games at five different positions during the season. He’s a high-end athlete, with twitch and plus or better foot speed that translates to aggressive baserunning and range in the field. At the plate, Howell is still a work in progress, but he has an enticing combination of bat speed-driven power to his pull side, a discerning eye at the plate and above-average on-base ability. Howell’s bat-to-ball skills are still below-average, leading to a high amount of swing and miss. Howell is an excellent fastball hitter, but struggled versus breaking balls and changeups in 2021. Many evaluators noted he’ll need to improve his ability to hit spin and cut down on the whiffs in order to develop into an everyday regular.
The Future: A tooled-up and versatile slugger with the ability to fill in at a variety of premium positions, Howell was left off of Milwaukee’s 40-man roster, indicative of the need for further refinement in his game. He’ll likely return to Double-A Biloxi to begin the 2022 campaign.
