School: Duke
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age at Draft: 21.8
Oschell was a physically projectable righthander with impressive feel for a changeup coming out of high school. He ranked as the No. 499 player on the BA 500 in the 2021 class, but made it to campus at Duke, where he flashed day one upside after a strong sophomore season in 2023 when he posted a 0.69 ERA out of the bullpen and later pitched well with Team USA in the summer. Oschell wasn’t able to replicate that dominance during his 2024 junior season, however, and posted a 6.94 ERA over 23.1 innings with more walks than strikeouts. A 6-foot-7, 230-pound righthander, Oschell averages 94 mph and touches 98 with a fastball that features solid riding life and swing-and-miss traits but he is highly erratic with its location. He showed better feel to land a low-80s breaking ball that blends between a slider and curveball that might be his most consistent pitch presently. Oschell has mixed in a mid-80s changeup at times but has not used the pitch frequently. Oschell’s delivery is a bit rigid with effort that, when paired with his control struggles this spring, make him a high-probability reliever. The disparity between his 2023 performance with Duke and Team USA and his 2024 spring season makes Oschell a challenging prospect for teams to evaluate, but one who could still fit squarely on day two for those hoping he can return to form in pro ball.

Oschell is a Duke commit with a body type similar to former Blue Devils righthander Michael Matuella at 6-foot-7, 215 pounds. Oschell doesn’t have the velocity that Matuella had in his prime years in college, but there could be more coming to add to a fastball that sits at 88-90 mph and reaches 92. Oschell has an excellent changeup for a high school pitcher, holding it with a split grip between his middle and ring fingers. It comes out of his hand at 76-78 mph and dives near the plate with late tumble, projecting as a potential plus pitch that’s effective against both lefties and righties. He throws an 82-85 mph slider that’s behind his changeup and will need the most work. Oschell throws with some rigidity to his mechanics and most likely will end up at Duke, where he could be a riser in a few years if he can bump his velocity into the mid 90s.
