The Pirates haven't had many prospects from Venezuela in recent years, but Aliendo made a good first impression in the United States last season with a team-high 38 RBIs in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Aliendo has power, as his quick wrists enable him to hit the ball the ball hard to all fields. He also has a knack for driving in runs despite his inexperience. He's a good defensive outfielder with a plus arm and likely will wind up on a corner because he doesn't have quite the range for center field. Aliendo needs more plate discipline because he swings at too many bad pitches and rarely walks. He isn't a great runner and probably won't steal many bases. He also could stand to put on a few pounds, which would enhance his power potential. Aliendo was the talk of instructional league last fall, hitting a string of long home runs in games and batting practice. He’s probably at least four years away from the majors but has opened the eyes of the Pirates, who don’t have many big-time power threats.
