View Draft Report
Grundy will get drafted for the fourth time in June after previously turning down the Rangers (46th round out of an Illinois high school in 2009), Marlins (42nd round out of Heartland, Ill., CC in 2011) and the Twins (27th round out of Kentucky last year). Grundy, who began his college career at Miami, has remade himself as a senior by adding polish at the expense of pure stuff. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder has shown better control and improved feel for his changeup, but his fastball now sits at 86-88 mph and his slider has lost sharpness. Scouts projected him as a reliever because he had a lot of effort in his delivery, but they liked him more when he ran his fastball as high as 94 mph and got more swings and misses with his slider.

Grundy pitched sparingly at Miami in 2010 before transferring to Heartland (Ill.) CC last year and moving on to Kentucky this spring. He's attractive as a lefthander who can maintain a 90-91 mph for five innings, though he hasn't topped out at 94 this season as often as he has in the past. He has added some fastball life, and he still gets swings and misses with his slider. Grundy has improved his sinking changeup to give him an effective third pitch, but most scouts think he'll be a pro reliever because he's not big (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) and has a lot of effort in his delivery. His command and feel for pitching are average at best.
