Drafted in the 13th round (417th overall) by the Los Angeles Angels in 2012.
View Draft Report
A 40th-round pitch out of a Kansas high school in 2009, Morin was the top prospect in the MINK League the summer before he started college. He since has turned into a dominant college closer for the Tar Heels, and with one more save this season he would tie the North Carolina single-season record of 18, held by big leaguer Andrew Carignan. After allowing four home runs as a freshman, he has allowed just one in the last two seasons. As a pro, however, his potential could be limited if he doesn't develop a usable breaking ball. Morin has a good frame at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds and pitches with an average fastball, and he can reach back for more when the game is on the line. His changeup is an equalizer that sits in the mid-70s.

Morin appeared to be destined for success when he was named the top prospect in the summer-college MINK League the summer before he began his North Carolina career. He lived up to those expectations by setting a UNC and Atlantic Coast Conference single-season saves record with 19 as a junior. Morin added 27 more in just a season and a half as a pro, reaching Double-A Arkansas for the second half of 2013. When batters dig in against him, they have a pretty good idea of what's coming. But knowing Morin's changeup is coming is not the same as being able to hit it. His plus changeup is essentially two different pitches, as he can make it break away from both lefthanders and righthanders depending on how he cuts it or lets it run. In 2013, he started to do a better job of throwing his below-average slider as a surprise pitch early in counts. Morin's 90-94 mph fastball has enough velocity, but it's his ability to throw strikes--he doles out a walk or two per month--that makes it even better. The combination of Morin's plus changeup, average fastball and excellent location should be enough to carve out a useful career as a late-inning reliever, and his competitiveness means he might end up exceeding expectations.
