Melendez is a 5-foot-9, 185-pound catcher who stood out in high school for his above-average arm strength and defensive aptitude behind the dish. He spent one season at Florida International where he struggled to hit before transferring to Pittsburgh where he took a step forward and homered 10 times in 32 games. Melendez has a noisy righthanded swing and alternates between a big leg kick and a toe tap to get started and has some swing-and-miss tendencies to go with a bit of pull-side power. He showed a better approach and more contact skills early in the 2024 season which could make his defensive profile more appealing if he maintains it. Melendez is the younger brother of Royals catcher MJ Melendez.
