Track Record: If you want a catcher who seems as invested in a pitcher’s success from pitch to pitch as the pitcher himself, Cossetti’s your guy. He’s an 11th-round grinder who showed his polish at the plate in an impressive 2023 season. Cossetti was a four-year starter at St. Joseph’s who slugged over .700 in his final two seasons.
Scouting Report: Cossetti’s bat gives him a chance to hit more than most catchers. Now the question is going to be whether or not his glove is enough to make him a usable backup or even a second-division regular. He understands how to work with pitchers but he’s not very athletic which is why he’s a below-average defender for now. His willingness to work gives hope that he’ll develop into a fringe-average or even average receiver and blocker, but for now, he still has plenty of work to do. He’ll flash average pop times, but will also show some below-average ones. As a hitter, Cossetti can be beaten by quality stuff, but he rarely beats himself. He has the ability to yank 15-20 home runs a year if he gets steady playing time, and he’ll also draw his walks.
The Future: Cossetti is the kind of grinder that scouts, coaches and pitchers love. His defense is going to have to keep improving for him to find a way to the big leagues, but he’s passed the first test by handling both Class A levels.
