Draft Prospects
It's a down year for prospects in Kansas, especially among the colleges. Poppe ranks as the top prospect from the state's four-year schools despite going 0-5, 6.52 and allowing opponents to hit .333 against him. The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder is an intriguing athlete who was recruited by college football programs as a tight end and led the Girard High basketball team to consecutive Kansas 4-A runner-up finishes. Though he has a 91-93 mph fastball that touches 95 and shows flashes with his slider, he doesn't miss enough bats. His arm action is so long that batters see the ball well out of his hand and he struggles to repeat his delivery. He doesn't command his pitches and leaves them up in the zone to often. The Rays selected him in the 37th-round last year, when he was eligible as a 21-year-old sophomore.
