View Draft Report
Sprinkle entered the year with a chance to be one of the first shortstops taken in the 2022 draft, but he suffered through a miserable season at UC Santa Barbara that cratered his draft stock. He began the year as the Gauchos leadoff hitter and was batting ninth by the end of the season as his approach, power and confidence all slipped. Sprinkle is one of the best pure athletes in the college class this year. He is a quick, twitchy defensive shortstop with the hands, range and actions to be a plus defender at the position. He frequently makes acrobatic plays and has the above-average arm strength to make jump throws from deep in the hole. Sprinkle has previously shown a fluid swing and above-average raw power at the plate, but this spring his swing path regressed, he struggled to hit the ball with any authority and he started guessing as he struggles mounted. He also took his struggles with him back to the field and made uncharacteristic errors. Sprinkle's athleticism and ability to play shortstop still have teams interested early on the draft's second day. His defense will buy him time to rediscover his swing in pro ball.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High
Track Record: Regarded as a first-round talent coming into his junior year at UC Santa Barbara, Sprinkle underachieved at the plate with his approach, power and confidence all going backwards. He posted an OPS of .797 after a much better .938 figure in 2021. He especially struggled to hit the ball with authority, and then took his hitting struggles to the field and affected his plus defense. The White Sox picked him in the fourth round, and he signed for a $452,900 bonus. Sprinkle didn't show much more at Low-A Kannapolis, with a .237/.290/.301 batting line.
Scouting Report: Sprinkle has above-average bat speed with some power, with a leg kick that gets too aggressive and can create length in his swing. The power projects as below-average now but he showed more juice earlier in his college career. Swing adjustments may help him regain some of that pop. He has the hands, feet and range to be a plus defender with an above-average arm at shortstop. His defense and above-average speed should give him the tools to figure things out offensively as he progresses through the system. He was an effective base stealer in college, so he should be able to steal at least 20 bags a season if he gets on base enough.
The Future: He'll likely head back to Kannapolis after spring training, but a strong start could get him to High-A Winston-Salem. With some improvement at the plate, Sprinkle will have a future as a utility infielder, and if he gets the swing and approach he showed earlier in his college career, there's a chance for a second-division starter.

Sprinkle came into the year with a chance to be one of the first shortstops taken in the 2022 draft. But the third-year sophomore struggled to hit with the same approach, power and confidence he had shown in 2021. He began the year as the Gauchos’ leadoff hitter, slid to the No. 2 spot before long, but then was buried, batting ninth by the end of the season. Sprinkle seemed to be guessing, and guessing wrong, a lot during his midseason struggles and his swing lost its fluidity. Scouts have seen above-average raw power from him, but he didn’t hit the ball with any authority this year. He hit .285/.381/.416, which was a big dip from the .353/.402/.536 he hit in 2021. Sprinkle is a true shortstop with the hands, actions and range to be a plus defender and an above-average arm. That ability to play shortstop will likely induce a team to give him a shot to refind his swing in pro ball.
