Drafted in the 3rd round (106th overall) by the Houston Astros in 2019 (signed for $500,000).
View Draft Report
Brewer has proven to be a revelation for Michigan as the JuCo transfer from Lincoln Trail (Ill.) JC quickly turned into the Wolverines’ best hitter. A rare righthanded hitter who throws lefthanded, Brewer has primarily played first base and right field because Jesse Franklin was already established in center field for Michigan, but Brewer projects as a potential center fielder in pro ball thanks to his athleticism and 70-grade speed. He’s a surprisingly adept first baseman as well, but that position fails to fully take advantage of his speed. He can play all three outfield spots, and his plus arm fits in right field. Brewer’s swing can get too long and he swings and misses too much because he occasionally expands his strike zone, but he stings the ball when he connects and he has some pull-side power to left and left-center field. He also is one of the best basestealers in the Big Ten with 19 steals in 23 attempts. Brewer is one of the more athletic college hitters in the Midwest and led the conference in hitting.

Organization Prospect Rankings
Track Record: Brewer played football and baseball in high school before blossoming into the Big Ten Conference player of the year at Michigan during its run to the 2019 College World Series finals. The Astros drafted him in the third round that July and gave him a $500,000 signing bonus. A nagging toe injury limited Brewer to 16 games in 2019 and left knee surgery sidelined him for most of 2020. He spent his first full minor league season at Low-A Fayetteville, stealing 21 bases and hitting .275/.375/.410 in 297 plate appearances.
Scouting Report: Brewer has a bevy of tantalizing tools that haven’t yet come together. He is one of the fastest and most athletic players in the Astros organization and showcases plus speed. He has above-average raw power, but a grooved swing prevents him from displaying it much in games. Brewer swings and misses inside the strike zone too often and needs to improve his overall approach. He is an average defender in center field with an average arm but played in the more corners during his Michigan tenure despite his running ability.
The Future: Brewer held his own at Low-A despite some offensive flaws. He’ll move up in 2022, where better pitching may be the best test for his toolsy profile.
TRACK RECORD: After starring in football and baseball in high school, Brewer went to Lincoln Trail (Ill.) JC for two seasons before transferring to Michigan. Swing adjustments helped him take off and become the 2019 Big Ten player of the year as he led the Wolverines to the College World Series finals. The Astros took him in the third round and signed him for $500,000. Brewer scuffled in his pro debut and missed time with a toe injury, then had left knee surgery in April 2020 that kept him off the field the entire year.
SCOUTING REPORT: Brewer has the backward profile of a lefthanded thrower who bats righthanded. While he hit well at Michigan, his tools stand out more than his pure hitting ability. He's a potential power/speed threat in center field, with his power and wheels both grading out plus. Brewer has worked to better incorporate his lower half into his swing, but it's not the most adjustable stroke, which leaves him with holes. Brewer has the speed for center field but mostly played on the corners at Michigan.
THE FUTURE: Brewer's athleticism and history of making swing changes bode well, but his bat will be tested by better pitching. He should be ready for the start of spring training in 2021.
TRACK RECORD: Brewer was a football/baseball star in high school who went to Lincoln Trail (Ill.) JC. After two years there, he transferred to Michigan, reworked his swing and blossomed as the Big 10 Player of the Year, helping lead the Wolverines to the College World Series finals. His pro debut was interrupted by a toe injury that cost him almost the entire Tri-City season.
SCOUTING REPORT: Astros draftees generally are picked for their bats and not their athleticism, so Brewer's well-rounded toolset stands out. He has plus speed, plus power and a chance to stick in center field, even though he generally played in the corners with Michigan. He is even an adept first baseman— he throws lefty even though he hits righty. At the plate, Brewer's swing is a work in progress, but it's one that has come a long away already. He learned to use his lower half in his year at Michigan, but his swing is still a little grooved at times. The Astros are counting on his ability to continue to make adjustments.
THE FUTURE: There are some questions over how well Brewer can tweak his swing to be selective while still getting to his significant power potential, but the aptitude he displayed at Michigan is a positive sign.
