Track Record: The Reds were one of the most aggressive and one of the best teams at aggressively pursuing players as nondrafted free agents when MLB cut the coronavirus-affected 2020 MLB draft to five rounds. Carson Spiers has already made it to the majors as a 2020 Reds’ NDFA, and Hurtubise should soon follow. The Army product led all Reds’ MiLB hitters with a .330 average and reached Triple-A.
Scouting Report: Hurtubise has long impressed with his all-out, high-effort approach, but that intensity might also have made it hard to notice what a solid player he’s become. He has modest power, but he finished third in the minors with 10 triples. He can yank a ball over the outfielders’ heads every now and then, but he’s best as a pest. His short swing makes it hard to strike him out, and he knows that a walk can be as good as a double given his plus-plus speed. Hurtubise’s speed isn’t as useful in the outfield, where he’s a choppy runner and an average defender with a fringe-average arm.
The Future: Hurtubise’s speed, contact ability and versatility give him a very solid shot at a lengthy MLB career. He was added to the 40-man roster in November 2023. He’s slated to head back to Triple-A Louisville to start 2024, but could make his MLB debut soon.
