Brannigan is a two-way player at Notre Dame, but he’s the club’s everyday third baseman and only sporadically pitched. He wants to hit and he has had much more success as a hitter than pitcher, but scouts have long been intrigued by his exceptional arm strength as a pitcher. Brannigan is an extremely athletic player with loud tools. His best-case outcomes could see him being a Gold Glove third baseman or a fireballing pitcher, but he’s yet to get close to his potential at either spot so far. As a hitter, Brannigan gets caught on his front foot too often, and he can be induced to expand his strike zone. He flashes plus raw power, but he doesn’t consistently drive the ball. He’s a plus-plus runner, although he’s not a savvy base stealer. Defensively, he’s a plus defender at third with a plus-plus arm. There are enough tools here to let Brannigan go out as a hitter, as if he makes some adjustments at the plate, he could be an impact defender at third base with solid power. If he doesn’t make it work as a hitter, he always has a fallback option as a pitcher. Without really working much on his pitching, he’s sitting 96-97 mph and touching 99-100 while flashing a plus slider. His fastball has average life. His control is below average for now, but with his athleticism there are reasons to think it could improve significantly if he focused on pitching—he’s thrown fewer than 25 innings in his three years at Notre Dame.

BA Grade: 45/High
Track Record: Brannigan was a two-way talent at Notre Dame, where he was a fireballing reliever out of the bullpen who brought his fastball into the upper 90s. That same arm strength served him well as the team’s everyday third baseman. The Pirates took Brannigan in the third round of the 2022 draft and signed him for $770,700. He reached Low-A in his first pro season, then returned to the level in 2023. Brannigan made it to High-A but missed enough time with quad injuries that he made up for lost time in the Arizona Fall League.
Scouting Report: Brannigan’s best assets are on display when he’s in the field. He’s the best infield defender in the organization and has the strongest throwing arm as well. Scouts have him as a plus shortstop with double-plus arm strength. Brannigan has plenty of power too, but he has too much swing-and-miss in his game and the Pirates would like him to create a more varied bat path and add more stability in his lower half. He struck out at a clip of nearly 30% in the minors, then saw that figure escalate during his time in the AFL. His chase rates are roughly average, but he whiffs too often at pitches both in and out of the zone.
The Future: Brannigan should reach Double-A Altoona in 2024. If he cuts down his swing and miss, he could greatly raise his stock. At worst, his defense could make him an asset in the big leagues who hits at the bottom of the order and provides the occasional longball.
