Track Record: Mejia wasn’t a prominent prospect coming out of college, but after cutting his ERA nearly in half while transitioning to a full-time starting role with New Mexico State in 2022, the Braves signed him for $100,000 in the 11th round. In his first full pro season spent entirely at High-A Rome, Mejia showed impressive control and command and posted a 4.69 ERA in 23 starts and 121 innings. His 5.6% walk rate was good for second-best in the system among pitchers with at least 50 innings.
Scouting Report: Mejia has a great pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and is an above-average strike-thrower thanks to a clean starter’s delivery. He has a three-pitch mix headlined by a fastball that sits in the 90-92 mph range that will touch 93. The pitch has below-average velocity and generic riding life, but he does get solid arm-side run, and his ability to command the pitch is above-average or plus. Mejia also has great usability of a low-to-mid-80s slider that he threw nearly as frequently as his fastball in 2023. It has tight action and was a consistent swing-and-miss offering that he located nicely down and to his glove side. Mejia will also mix in a below-average, mid-80s changeup to lefthanded hitters.
The Future: Mejia has starter traits, but will need to add power to his fastball to project as more than a fill-in, depth starter at the big league level.
