Roberts has been an outfielder for North Carolina and scouts like his zone control and solid swing from the left side. He’s a career .248/.409/.918 hitter who has walked more times than he’s struck out. He’s only caught a handful of games in his collegiate career and most scouts think he’s an outfielder in the long run, but a team could take a shot at trying him out behind the plate.

Track Record: Recruited out of high school as a catcher, Roberts wound up mostly playing the outfield at North Carolina and developed into one of the Tar Heels’ best hitters. He led the team with 10 home runs his junior year and was drafted by the D-backs in the fifth round. Roberts made clear he wanted to catch during the draft process and has split time between catcher, first base and the outfield as a pro. He reached Double-A Amarillo in 2023 and hit .278/.383/.523 with 17 home runs.

Scouting Report: Roberts is a short, strong lefthanded hitter who employs a quick, level swing that he uses to spray balls to all fields. He has a knack for producing backspin and good carry, especially to the opposite-field gap, and projects to be a fringe-average hitter with average power. He has a patient approach that produces walks at roughly a 13% clip, but he is prone to swinging and missing in the strike zone and has trouble against lefthanded pitching. Roberts has work to do behind the plate in terms of receiving premium stuff. He has plus arm strength and is adept at blocking pitches in the dirt.

The Future: Roberts might never be a frontline catcher, but if he develops into a passable option he could carve out a role as an outfielder/third catcher who logs at-bats against righthanded pitching.
