Cavan doesn't run particularly well, his defensive range is nothing special and he had a softball swing when he signed for $30,000 as a 16th-round pick in 2009. But in the words of high Class A San Jose manager Andy Skeels, "The kid does nothing but beat people." Cavan is a Giants organization favorite and a tireless worker who learned to cut down his swing. By the end of last season, he might have been San Jose's best situational hitter. His switch-hitting abilities and talent for working deep counts make him an ideal fit in the No.2 slot. He has more usable power from the left side, but both swings come naturally because he has been a switch-hitter since T-ball. His pop comes more to the gaps than over the fence, and he's a fringy runner with good instincts on the bases. Cavan significantly improved his defense in 2011, making just five errors after committing 26 the year before. Managers rated him the best defensive second baseman in the California League. His range and arm are average for his position but not enough for him to play shortstop, where he spent his pro debut, on an extended basis. Cavan will jump to Double-A in 2012 and could find himself in the big leagues in short order.
