Drafted in the 9th round (267th overall) by the San Diego Padres in 2014 (signed for $150,000).
View Draft Report
Scouts say they would have put a 20 on Vilter's bat in 2013, but he came out of nowhere to lead the Big West with 10 home runs and a .550 slugging percentage this spring, attracting sixth-to-10th-round interest. At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Vilter is a better fit at third base or even second, and he has shown the ability to be an adequate defender at either spot, with a fringe-average arm. He's a below-average runner, but his feet work well enough to give him a chance to play second. He's a streaky hitter, but he has some strength, and scouts who like him think he projects as a fringy hitter with a chance for 55 power.
