Scouting Reports
-
TRACK RECORD: Sanchez signed with the Nationals for $225,000 during the 2018-19 international signing period and made his professional debut as a 16-year-old in the Dominican Summer League. He understandably struggled to a 5.63 ERA with nearly as many walks (20) as strikeouts (23) in his pro debut, but he was invited to instructional league in 2020 and began to show positive strides.
SCOUTING REPORT: Sanchez has the raw ingredients of a promising righthanded starter. He has a fastball that ranges from 90-95 mph, a high-spin curveball and a plus changeup. He adds and subtracts well for his age and has started to show the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes. Whether Sanchez can hold that stuff over a full season or consistently throw strikes in actual games remains an open question, but he’s moving in the right direction. He’s only 18 years old and still has room to get stronger.
THE FUTURE: Sanchez is on track to make his U.S. debut in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in 2021. He is one of many young pitchers the Nationals hope will take a jump in his return to game action.
