There is no question that Mattox has the talent to pitch in the major leagues. The Mets simply are waiting for natural maturity to run its course and make him a more complete pitcher. Mattox was the most consistent starter at Capital City last season and was named the team's pitcher of the year. Though not overpowering, he has four useful pitches that he throws for strikes. He produces excellent sinking movement on his 90 mph fastball. He switches speeds well with his changeup and keeps hitters off balance. Mattox also is capable of throwing his curveball for strikes at any time in the count, while his 79-80 mph slider is effective when he has the feel for it. New York is confident Mattox will take a major step forward when his focus and all-around preparation catch up with his ability. That would help improve his command. He'll return to high Class A, with a Double-A promotion a possibility later in the year.
