View Draft Report
Tawa was an all-state quarterback in addition to being a baseball star at West Linn (Ore.) High and won Gatorade State Player of the Year in both sports. He arrived at Stanford as a top recruit and started all four years for the Cardinal, but he suffered frequent injuries and hit just .267.318/.438 in his college career. Tawa’s best trait is his versatility. He’s a capable defender at shortstop, second base and center field and has the arm strength to play third base. He has flashed some wiry strength and feel for the barrel at the plate, but he’s never been healthy enough to have sustained success. His latest injuries this spring were lower back tightness and a recurring hamstring strain. Tawa’s defensive versatility interests some teams on the draft’s third day. He needs to stay healthy and prove he can hit to rise.

Organization Prospect Rankings
-
Track Record: Tawa won Gatorade Player of the Year honors in football three times and baseball once during his prep career in Oregon and was seen as a legit baseball prospect after a big freshman year at Stanford. But injuries and poor performance hurt his stock, and after the D-backs selected him as a senior sign last year, he put together the most productive offensive season of any of the club’s debut players.
Scouting Report: Tawa profiles as a versatile and athletic up-the-middle player. He has tools, namely his plus speed, and showed some ability to put together good at-bats and produce in Low-A, though he was old for the level. He has a simple, efficient swing with good bat speed and generated good batted-ball data in his debut. He played mostly second base and the outfield, logging the most innings in center, and is viewed as an above-average defender with an average arm at each of those positions.
The Future: Tawa suffered a left shoulder injury that might have affected his performance across two seasons at Stanford. Now healthy after surgery, the hope is that he is back to the type of prospect he appeared to be years ago. He profiles best as a super-utility player. He figures to open the year in High-A.

An exemplary high school athlete, Tawa was a heralded football and baseball player at West Linn (Ore.) High, where he was a three-time Gatorade Football Player of the Year and the 2017 Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year. He led his high school’s football team to a 2016 state championship and set records for career touchdown passes and passing yards, while also leading his baseball team to three league titles. After three years with Stanford, Tawa has hit .267/.307/.435 with the ability to handle almost any position. Versatility is the calling card for the 6-foot, 191-pound infielder and outfielder. Scouts believe his best fit is in the outfield, while coaches have said he handles second base naturally as well. Tawa has a tendency to put his foot on the gas pedal at all times and that can allow the game to speed up on him. Coaches have said he plays baseball like a football player. His bat is a bit light and scouts wonder how much he’ll hit at the next level, and he also doesn’t have much power to speak of. It’s difficult to see Tawa developing into an everyday player without more offense, but teams who value the defensive versatility he offers could be interested.
