Cross played well on the showcase circuit last summer and appeared in last year's Perfect Game All-America Classic in San Diego. But a back injury this spring has prevented him from building on that performance, as he's been unable to hit much of the season. The issue hasn't prevented him from seeing time behind the plate, however, and he's regarded as one of the top defensive catchers in this year's high school class. Entering the spring, some scouts believed Cross was a good enough hitter to project as a big league regular behind the plate. But his back injury creates more uncertainty around him and may lead him to fulfilling his commitment to North Carolina.
