Guzman, who isn't related to the major league pitcher of the same name, would have a much brighter outlook if the cloud of elbow trouble hadn't interrupted his season. Before that setback, he was on a meteoric rise after converting from catcher in 1998. He made the switch for a familiar reason: he couldn't hit. But the arm strength that made him an intriguing catcher made him a very intriguing pitcher. When healthy, Guzman can throw up to 97 mph with an improving slider and good changeup. He also has surprisingly good command for his level of experience. He was dominant last year at Frederick, earning a quick promotion before he was shut down with an elbow strain that required minor surgery. He was ineffective at Bowie when he returned, though the Orioles say his arm strength is almost all the way back and he looked good in instructional league. Guzman remains a work in progress, and given that and his tender elbow, the bullpen might be in his future. The organization wants to give him a chance to start, though. He'll return to Bowie and could move fast if he stays healthy.
