View Draft Report
The son of former big leaguer Tom Underwood, J.D. had a solid high school career in West Palm Beach, Fla., then stayed local and pitched for Palm Beach State JC. A two-way player, he led Palm Beach to the Florida state championship as the team's leading hitter (.352, team-best 48 RBIs) and best pitcher (10-2, 1.55). He had seven complete games and maintained his stuff through most of the season thanks to a strong 6-foot-1, 205-pound frame and efficient delivery. Underwood is a pitchability righty who throws his fastball in the 87-90 mph range, touching 91-92, and throws a lot of strikes with his slider and curveball. He walked just 12 in 110 innings this spring and would be a welcome addition to Miami's pitching staff if he doesn't sign.
