Day's fastball has never progressed as scouts had hoped when he was in high school. But he does still touch 93-94 mph in glimpses although it quickly tails off to 88-90. He's had some success this year (1-1, 3.41 with 44 strikeouts in 34.1 innings).

Draft Prospects
Some teams will probably look at how much projection is involved in Day's future and will be quite willing to let him pitch and potentially star at Vanderbilt for the next three seasons. But others will look at his present stuff and see if they can induce him to forgo college. Seen on the right day, Day has three present average or better pitches. He throws an 88-92 mph fastball that will touch 93-94. Pitching from a three-quarters arm slot, he gets good downhill plane on his heater. He's shown an above-average curveball and a very reliable tick-above-average changeup with some late fade. He gets good extension in his delivery and he has a loose, fast arm that seems to generate the velocity easily. However, the 17-year-old Day looks almost frail and may lack physical projection, as he has thin hips and shoulders and a skinny lower half. If he can add strength, he has the makings of a mid-rotation starter, but there's a lot of big meals and good weight-room work in Day's future if he's going to reach that ceiling.
